Let's be honest — most women don't Google "how to prepare for a boudoir session" because they feel totally confident and ready. They Google it because they're a little nervous, a little unsure, and they want to know what they're getting into before they commit.
That's completely normal. And you're in the right place.
This guide covers everything — what to do in the weeks leading up to your session, what to bring, how to get your mindset right, and what to expect on the day itself. While we've written this specifically for how we do things at Blush Boudoir in Dayton, most of it applies to any professional boudoir experience.
First, a Word About Nerves
Almost every woman who walks through our door arrives saying some version of the same things:
"I'm not photogenic."
"I don't know how to be sexy."
"I should have lost 10 pounds first."
"I'm too old for this."
"I'm going to be so awkward."
And almost every one of those same women leaves saying: "I can't believe that's me."
We say this not to dismiss your nerves, but because it genuinely matters that you know: you are not the exception. You are not the one woman for whom this won't work. The nerves are part of it - and they don't last.
You don't need to know how to pose. You don't need modeling experience. You don't need to arrive confident. Our team directs every pose, every hand placement, every expression. You are never left guessing.
What to Do in the Weeks Before Your Session
Small details make a real difference on camera, and a little preparation goes a long way toward helping you feel your best.
1–2 Weeks Before
Avoid spray tans within one week of your session - they can look uneven under studio lighting. If you're getting waxing done, schedule it 2–3 days before your shoot, not the day before (you want any redness to settle). If you're getting a haircut or color, do that at least a week in advance so it has time to settle naturally. And avoid trying any new skincare products that could irritate your skin close to your session date.
The Week Of
Hydrate consistently - skin looks noticeably different when you're well hydrated. Moisturize daily. Avoid excessive alcohol, which can cause puffiness. If you plan to shave, the night before is ideal.
The Day Before
Skip the intense workout - soreness and swelling aren't what you want going into your session. Take care of your nails (neutral tones photograph beautifully, and chipped polish is distracting on camera). Steam or iron your outfits, and remove all tags and stickers beforehand.
The Morning Of
Eat a real breakfast - energy and confidence are connected, and you'll feel it by mid-session if you skip it. Most importantly: wear loose, comfortable clothing on your way in. Tight waistbands, socks, and undergarments leave marks on your skin that can take an hour or more to fade. Give your body a clean canvas.
What to Bring
You don't need to figure out a complete wardrobe on your own - that's part of what our team is here for. But here's a helpful starting list:
- Lingerie sets in styles you feel good in
- Bodysuits
- A robe or kimono
- An oversized sweater or button-down shirt
- Any meaningful personal pieces - jewelry, a veil if you're a bride, something sentimental
- Heels if you love them (never required - we photograph beautifully without them)
Every Blush session also includes access to our curated client closet, with pieces in a full range of sizes. Our photographers blend what you bring with studio selections to create the strongest combinations. You won't be standing in a corner wondering what to put on next — we guide all of it.
The number of outfit changes depends on the experience you've chosen, ranging from one or two looks for a shorter session to five or more for our most comprehensive packages.
Hair, Makeup, and the Moment It All Starts to Feel Real
Every Blush Experience includes professional hairstyling and makeup artistry - this isn't an add-on, it's built into every session. Your glam appointment typically takes 60–90 minutes and is often when nerves start to melt away.
Arrive with a clean, moisturized face, completely dry hair, and no leftover mascara or liner. False lashes are included and applied as part of your look.
During glam you're welcome to enjoy a glass of champagne or a mimosa, but we genuinely recommend eating a solid breakfast beforehand rather than relying on bubbles to get you through. You'll thank yourself by hour three.
For many clients, the moment they see themselves in the mirror after hair and makeup is the moment the whole experience shifts from nerve-wracking to exciting.
Privacy and Comfort: What You're Always in Control Of
Before your session begins, we talk through your comfort level - fully covered looks, implied nudity, partial nudity. Nothing is assumed. Nothing is pushed. You set the boundaries, and you can adjust them at any time during the session.
No one else is in the studio during your experience unless you've booked a couples session. What happens in the studio stays entirely within your control - including whether your images are ever shared publicly. Many clients choose complete privacy. That choice is always yours.
On the Day of Your Shoot
Sessions at Blush range from approximately one hour for a shorter experience to four or five hours for our most comprehensive packages. More time means more outfit changes, more sets, more variety, and a more relaxed pace overall.
Sessions are never rushed. We work at your pace. Music plays. Energy builds. And by the time most sessions end, clients are asking if they can keep going.
After Your Session
Your image reveal typically takes place two to five days after your shoot. You can come back to the studio for an in-person ordering appointment, or view your edited images in a secure, password-protected online gallery - whichever works better for you. During your reveal you'll select your album, prints, and digital images.
The Most Important Thing
Preparing well lets you fully enjoy the experience rather than spending it worried about logistics. But the single most important thing you can do isn't on any checklist.
It's giving yourself permission to show up exactly as you are.
You don't need to change your body before booking. You don't need to become more confident first. You don't need a reason beyond wanting this for yourself.
You simply need to show up. We handle the rest.
